The XX - 2009

De repente me da la sensación de escuchar música debajo del agua, difusa, en cámara muy lenta, con sonidos opacos. Las voces son una secuencia de susurros, un dialogo intimo que de vez en vez tiene momentos de tensión y otros de romance. Me parece fantástico como logran con un esquema bastante austero que este álbum debut no suene improvisado y que al contrario se sienta que los tracks fueron cuidadosamente producidos y grabados, revisados con cariño y relamidos varias veces. Todo con un aire de inocencia y sin pretensión excesiva.

The XX son un cuarteto londinense (obvio) que ha logrado acaparar la atención de los medios con este álbum debut y que se coloca en nuevo lugar para un grupo de rock juvenil. Se olvidan del up beat y de la distorsión para meterse en un mood denso, quieto y melancólico.

Me puedo imaginar a la perfección a un chico en el tren de Londres con la mirada perdida en las luces del túnel escuchando este soundtrack. O por lo menos así lo escucho yo.

Original y Cover - All my Colors (1981-2009)

All my colors pertenece al segundo disco de Echo & the Bunnymen "Heaven Up Here" que históricamente es considerado el álbum punta de lanza de la escena new wave de liverpool en los ochentas, como lo fue "Closer" de Joy Division en la ciudad de Manchester. Con muchos paralelismos ambas bandas fueron lideradas por un Ian, uno Curtis y el otro McCulloch y de hecho en este track se llega a notar el sentimiento de "Transmission" tanto en la música como en la voz.

El bajista de soda stereo "Zeta" es fan declarado de la banda y ha admitido que la canción "Efecto Doppler" de su ultimo disco de estudio Sueño Stereo de 1995 esta basada totalmente en All my colors.

Este año el colectivo frances Nouvelle Vague dirigidos por Marc Collin y Olivier Libaux estan estrenando disco en donde ademas de los tradicionales covers a la bossa nova de exitos ochenteros ahora tambien incluyen duetos con los miembros originales de las bandas. Esta version es increiblemente hermosa y cuenta con la voz de Ian McCulloch.

Esta es la maqueta conceptual de lo que se quería hacer con la canción, básicamente en busca de texturas y profundidades. Esta se aproxima bastante a lo que seria la producción final.

Come Back (Demo Version)

Hace unos meses que aparecieron en la red algunos tracks del álbum en baja calidad como verdaderos anzuelos para los fans. Estas son versiones de poca intensidad y flojonas como para que los fans se decepcionaran un poco. Cuando escuche esta versión en realidad no me atrapo y no le puse mas atención. Cai en la trampa.


Come Back (First Version)


Durante todo el proceso de grabación la banda publico en la red clips que mostraban diferentes momentos en el estudio así como pruebas de voz y de sonido. Durante estas pruebas salieron algunas versiones alternativas de estudio. Acá es donde todo cambio. Esta versión es impresionante y junto con el video del performance en en donde para mi empieza a tener sentido. Inmediatamente al ver a Dave y Martin actuar juntos me vinieron a la mente la imagen de Ghost y Steve Finn de Lost Souls solo que con 30 años mas cada uno. Me encanta como sincronizan las voces y el sonido acústico e intimo de esta versión. Mas de un fan prefiere esta versión por encima de todas las demás.

Ceremony - Joy Division/New Order (1980-1981)

Primero, la historia.......

Esta es la ultima composición de Ian Curtis. Esencialmente marcaba un cambio de rumbo en el sonido y en la letra de la banda en el que se puede escuchar un estilo menos sombrío y con letras mas esperanzadoras. Era la señal de transición hacia los ochentas.

Con Ian Curtis solo existen dos grabaciones de la canción y la voz y la letra es apenas audible.

La primera esta grabada el 2 de mayo de 1980, en el ultimo concierto de la banda en el High Hall de la Universidad de Birmingham. Tan solo 16 días antes del suicidio de Curtis.

La segunda viene el el box-set Heart and Soul y es una grabación inédita de abril de 1980. El ritmo es bastante diferente y solo se alcanza a escuchar la ultima estrofa.

Después del suicidio de Curtis los 3 miembros restantes deciden seguir adelante y fundan New Order. Como todo el material final de Joy Division nunca fue grabado en un estudio deciden retomar las dos ultimas canciones escritas por Ian y convertirlas en las primeras grabaciones lanzados en un sencillo con Ceremony en el lado A y In a Lonely Place como lado B. Para no variar Bernard Summer no tenia idea de lo que Curtis cantaba así que necesito pasar las grabaciones anteriores por un equalizador de estudio para poder escribir las frases cantadas por Ian.

La primera grabación de marzo de 1981 tiene un sonido totalmente a Joy Division con el bajo mas resonante,la guitarra mucho mas distorsionada y la voz distante. La batería tiene un sonido mas solido con los platillos mucho mas abiertos. En esta version la voz de Bernard parece ser poseída por el espíritu de Ian.


New Order - Ceremony (original version)

En septiembre de 1981 re graban la canción ya con la participación de Gillian Gilbert antes de unirse formalmente a la banda. El sonido es muy diferente a la primera version ya que el bajo es mucho mas discreto y los platillos mas cerrados. la voz tiene menos efecto y la guitarra suena mucho mas acorde al resto de las canciones del disco Movement. Es el inicio del sonido New Order. Esta es la versión mas conocida de la canción.

Me hace pensar en una nota de despedida. Tal vez la ultima canción para Deborah Curtis. De lo ambiguo de estar o no enamorado.

Por ultimo, el contexto.......

Por una extraña razón, esto empezó a sonar en mi cabeza en el primer momento en el pasillo. Así, de forma sincronizada. Es como cuando pinchas discos y esperas el momento justo para darle al play. Al instante empezaron a sonar los primeros acordes. Todo se escuchaba super nítido y yo lo veía todo en tercera persona, o sea, de nuevo como en una película de Soffia Coppola y obvio con un soundtrack perfecto para el momento perfecto. Muchas tomas desde arriba y muchos acercamientos a los rostros. Después de eso, la verdad lo demás no importa nada.

Lo mejor del 2008: Taken By Cars - Endings Of A New Kind

Al parecer hay algo especial en los discos debut que nadie logra mantener en el tiempo, supongo que es una mezcla entre frescura, intensidad, pasión y sencillez que se va perdiendo en cuanto se va adquiriendo experiencia y la música se va desarrollando en lenguajes mas complejos. Supongo también que es el chiste de escuchar rock-chavitos de vez en cuando. Es interesante ver como en los discos debut no hay nada que perder y nada que demostrar, como fue el caso de interpol, bloc party, yeah yeah yeahs, strokes cuyos primeros discos son insuperables.

En este espacio se supondría que estaria el Intimacy de Bloc Party pero la verdad es que la saturación de sampleos de voz y la sobreproducción se alejan bastante de la sensación que tuve la primera vez que los escuche ya que me parecía que el sucesor de The cure finalmente había llegado. Esa sensación duro poco.


Taken by cars en un grupo Filipino con base en Manila que comenzó como un grupo de amigos que practicaban con la unica finalidad de tocar en vivo en un café local, después subieron sus canciones originales a MySpace y se hicieron de muchos seguidores que pedían sus canciones a las estaciones de radio. El disco debut tiene una mezcla de shoegaze, new wave y electro-rock como el de cualquier otro grupo nuevo pero muy pegajoso y energizante.
